Improving confidence through success

In the classroom, not every child reads at the same level. The Y recognizes some kids need extra help, and we provide that help for free through Y-READS!, a statewide program that teaches phonics, fluency and comprehension to kindergarteners though third graders. The teachers and administrators at Emma E. Booker Elementary School refer struggling readers directly to our after school care program that is held in a dedicated classroom on the school campus. Our first goal is to improve Southwest Florida's students’ basic literacy skills so that they are reading at grade level. The curriculum is research-based; students work one-on-one with a consistent instructor or volunteer. What comes with academic improvement is the immeasurable increase in a child’s self-esteem, and confidence grows with his/her new found success.
